I went to Yoyogi Hachimangu Shrine in Tokyo for Chinowa-kuguri.
At many shrines in Japan a large green ring appears at the end of June.
It is called Chinowa, and walking through is called Chinowa-Kuguri.
It’s for removing impurities that may have accumulated during the last 6 months.
It is part of Nagoshi no Oharae,
a traditional purification ritual held at the halfway point of the year.

In earlier times,
illness and disasters were much closer to everyday life.
So people also walked through the Chinowa to give thanks
for making it safely through the first half of the year,
and to pray for good health and safety in the months ahead.
That reminded me that being here now is not something I can take for granted.

Every day and every moment
Start to feel so precious ✨
This is something that I really love about shrine visits in Japan.
A simple ritual can gently change the way we see our life.
At the end of the year, there is Toshikoshi no Oharae
when this ring appears again at many shrines.
I look forward to Chinowa-Kuguri again just before welcoming a new year ☺️
